Trudie
Red was looking like heâd gotten hit with a sack of bricks when I walked in, shaking a little as it sank in that Laird had kissed me in front of everyone. Even if âeveryoneâ was only Red, Jack, and a few other customers who didnât seem to care all that much.
âDonât you say a word,â I told Red sternly.
Jack just chuckled to himself and went upstairs with his coffee.
Red, who seemed to realize from my tone that I was serious, didnât say anything. He actually listened to me for once and just kept quiet about it.
âI donât know what to do,â I admitted.
Red nodded. âThatâs okay.â
âI donât⦠I havenât⦠told you much about myself,â I started.
âTrust me,â Red said dryly, âwe noticed.â
âItâs because I had to flee my last life.â I couldnât bring myself to tell Red everything, but I had to talk to someone about how I was feeling with Laird and that meant I had to tell them about Pete, or at least a bit about it. And I trusted Red. âI was in an abusive relationship, and I was scared for my life. And⦠Laird isnât anything like him. I think about all the fear I used to carry around, and how I got so used to it, and it seems crazy that I donât feel that way about Laird, like itâs too good to be true. And that makes it hurt all the more because this is fake. It feels too good to be true because it is too good to be true.â
Red looked out the window, as if he could still see Laird standing there. âI donât know, that goodbye kiss felt pretty real to me.â
âBut itâs just⦠us practicing so that we can be comfortable with doing it when weâre with his family. And so that we donât forget to touch each other and act like a couple around them.â
Red gave me a shrewd look. âI know that you need the money, and obviously I think this whole thing is hilarious, but are you sure that this is the best thing for you? It sounds like youâre falling for Laird for real. Which Iâm all for, sure, butâ¦â
âI donât know.â I wanted someone as sweet and thoughtful as Laird. I certainly wanted someone I was as addicted to as him when it came to sex. Iâd had no idea that sex could be this good, and I had forgotten what it felt like to feel this safe with someoneâor perhaps I had never known. But this was all fake for him.
I didnât know what to do, and I was running out of time. We were leaving for Ireland tomorrow.
âWellâ¦â Red shrugged. âIf nothing else, youâre learning what itâs like to be in a good relationship? Youâre learning what you want when youâre with someone? We can fall into bad patterns easily, and you mightâve found someone who was like your awful ex. But now you know what itâs like to be with Laird and youâll be ready to find someone like that for real.
